Pasco Juniors are Making "Little Dresses for Africa"!

Each of our Junior Woman's Club meetings center around a community service project area.  At our recent meeting the International Outreach CSP hosted a speaker and we hope to begin a new service project to serve internationally.

At our club meeting last night, Lorraine Dabney, member of the GFWC Lutz-Land o' Lakes Woman's Club instructed the Juniors' members on how to make little girl's sundresses from pillow cases!  These dresses when finished are shipped to third world countries such as Guatemala or Africa and are perfect outfits for the heat that is well known in those countries.

It seems fairly simple- just fold the pillow case in half length wise and cut an armhole on either side.  Then sew bias tape around the armholes and finish up with bric brac for decoration.  You can either stitch or sew ribbon for the shoulders.                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                      Lorraine also showed us how to make a cute dress from a child's t-shirt.  These little sundresses will be sent to those countries where it is hot most of the time.

Several members took a sample dress home to attempt to make some dresses.  This is a very worthwhile project!

The Juniors are also donating their spare change to our "Heifer Box"!  Donations made to Heifer International go towards the purchase of a dairy animal in third world countries.

Do you see a lot of RED in the above pics?  I do!  Members wore red to kick off Women's Heart Health Month in February.  Know the signs for women as they are different than for men.  Take the proper steps to heart health!

Our new Board of Officers for 2014 was recently installed by District 8 Junior District Director, Bethani Coone (far right).  The new Board members are (from left):  President, Lauren Leahey, Vice President, Amanda Markiewicz, Secretary, Michelle Armstrong, and Treasurer, Sharon Grace.  President, Lauren Leahey has decided on a theme that is out of this world—“Juniors are Reaching for the Stars!”

Some of the Pasco Juniors community projects included writing and sending thank you notes to Honor Flight Veterans, stuffing holiday stockings for the Salvation Army, making Linus Blankets and donating them to area hospitals preemie units, planting Pinwheels for Prevention in honor of child abuse prevention, making “Bags of Hope” to donate to Guardian ad Litem, and many more.

The club meets from 6:30-8:30, on the first Tuesday of every month at Seven Oaks Clubhouse, 2910 Sports Core Circle in Wesley Chapel.   The next meeting is Tuesday, Feb. 4 at 6:30. We will host a speaker from the GFWC Lutz-Land o’ Lakes Woman’s Club.   She will fill us in on a new project that we are considering working on- making pillowcase dresses for donation to “Little Dresses for Africa”.

All ladies in the central Pasco areas are welcome to attend.  For more information or to see how you can get involved,  please visit our Facebook at: https://www.facebook.com/GFWCPascoJuniors   or send us an email at: gfwclutzpascojwc@gmail.com
